dishの意味は

「皿、鉢」

です。

There are three dishes on the table.
テーブルの上に３枚のお皿があります。

plateの意味は

「皿、板」

です。

I gave her a cake plate.
私は彼女にケーキ皿をあげた。

dishとplateの違いですが、

dishは、普通、大皿のことで、plateは一人一人が使う小皿のことを言います。
