the number of と a number of の違い

the number of の意味は

「～の数」

です。

“Do you know the number of houses in Japan ?”
「日本の家の数を知ってますか？」

a number of の意味は

「ある数の、かなりの数の」

です。

There are a number of dishes in my house.
家にはたくさんのおさらがある。

the number of と a number of の違いですが、the number of は、単数扱いで「～の数」とという意味です。一方、a number ofは、複数扱いで「ある数の、たくさんの数の」という意味となります。
